to the gold fields & rich farmlands of California during the 1840's
and 1850's - the greatest mass migration in American history. More than
1,000 miles of trail ruts and traces can still be seen in the vast
undeveloped west – reminders of the sacrifices, struggles, and triumphs
of early American travelers and settlers.

Harry Truman's story is one of hope & frustration, choice &
chance. As President, he took the US from its traditional isolationism
into the age of international involvement. Visitors experience the
surroundings Harry Truman knew from his formative years as a
22-year-old youth of modest ambition through his retirement and death
at age 88 as a former president of the United States.

Between May 1804 and September 1806, 31 men, one woman, and a baby
traveled from the plains of the Midwest to the shores of the Pacific
Ocean. They called themselves the Corps of Discovery. In their search
for a water route to the Pacific Ocean, they opened a window onto the
west for the young United States.

Two of America's clearest and most beautiful spring-fed rivers make up
the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, the first national park area to
protect a wild river system. The Current and Jacks Fork Rivers wind
through a landscape of rugged hills and towering bluffs. A message from

rivers.

Pony Express

The Pony Express NHT was used by young men on fast horses to carry the
nation's mail from Missouri to California in the unprecedented time of
only ten days. The relay system became the nation's most direct and
practical means of east-west communications before the telegraph, and
it played a vital role in aligning California with the Union in the
years just before the Civil War.

Ulysses S. Grant is known as the victorious Civil War general who saved
the Union and the 18th President of the United States. Few people know
about his rise to fame or his personal life. He first met Julia Dent,
his future wife, at her family home, named White Haven. Today, that
home commemorates their lives and loving partnership against
the turbulent backdrop of the nineteenth century.

Wilson's Creek National Battlefield - Republic, MO

Wilson's Creek was the first major Civil War battle fought west of the
Mississippi River, and the scene of the death of Nathaniel Lyon, the
first Union general killed in combat. Although a Southern victory, the
Southerners failed to capitalize on their success. With the exception
of the vegetation, the field has changed little and remains in near
pristine condition.
